Cassidy Cousins

My great great great Irish Grandmother Sarah Cassidy was sentenced to seven years transportation 24 October 1836. Unlike many of her peers Sarah was allowed to bring her two youngest children, Maryanne and Elizabeth with her to New South Wales. Approximately 75% of Irish children were left behind by their convict mothers. In the majority of cases transportation broke up families however within five years of arriving Sarah was reunited with two more of her children. Her daughter Catherine Cassidy was transported in 1837 and her son John Cassidy arrived with the 99th Regiment in 1842. The fate of Sarah’s husband Cormick Cassidy and their fifth child remains unknown.

After thirty years of research and collaboration, many of the descendants of Sarah and Cormick have been traced. We have been able to verify the paper trail with DNA matching. We have regular reunions and newly found cousins are always welcome.

    1. Hi Mike, your Aunt may well be our oldest living cousin, what a lot of changes she must have witnessed in her lifetime. We are working on a 2022 Reunion, more details to come.
